A section of Cameron Road will be reduced to one-way traffic this weekend.

This will affect traffic travelling between Arundel Street and Sixth Avenue near Tauranga Primary School.

Tauranga City Council says the lane reduction is to allow work on the wastewater upgrade.

"This work is the part of the Building our future – Cameron Road, Te Papa project and takes effect from 6am Saturday, July 1, to 6pm Sunday, July 2, (weather dependent).

"Traffic heading south (away from the city) will be redirected along Arundel Street to Devonport Road before re-joining Cameron Road at Sixth Avenue (east).

"Access to Fifth Avenue (east) will be maintained with a stop/go system at the Fifth Avenue/ Devonport Road intersection.

"Pedestrian and cyclist access, and access to properties in the area will be maintained.

"Buses will also follow the detours, and bus stops within the closure area will be marked as closed.

"Tauranga City Council and the Cameron Road Joint Venture thank you for your patience and understanding while we carry out this essential work."

In general, those Cameron road upgrades have been an embarrassment to the council. One must ask why council have taken so long to do so little.

You’ve Got To Be Kidding

Apparently not but then what’s new? Far from “Building Our Future” the Cameron Road debacle has become an absolute nightmare. Firstly they get the pipes around the wrong way and have to start again, then they take customer parking from businesses like in 7th Ave and now once again bus stops are once again being marked as “Closed.” Yet Anne Tolley and TCC want people to use public transport. Why would they? Meanwhile all we can do is fund this farce through yet another rates increase and hope that our grandchildren may get to experience Cameron Road back to normal.

I'm loving this...

(NOT). As someone who lives in the area, I can confirm that this debacle is causing incredible distress and discomfort to the local businesses. Last night, my neighbours and I decided to patronize one of the restaurants that has served the area for over 20 years. The proprietor has recently suffered breakins, (part of the current retail crime wave), so we wanted to show some support. We were forced through a maze of wire barriers, just to get to the business, and there were some hollow jokes about laboratory rats. The normally cheerful owner of the restaurant was obviously worried, and where his place would normally be well-patronized on a Friday evening, there was only one other table occupied besides ours. I asked if Council were offering any relief to the businesses and he said it was under discussion but nothing so far. It's shameful.
