Beautifying or stupefying sidewalk slip up?

The path to a more functional and beautified Cameron Rd may not be so simple, with city residents starting to notice hitches in council's 'upgrades”.

Tauranga City centre worker Shayne Spicer was walking along Cameron Rd recently when he noticed what he believes to be a footpath fail in the new paving outside St Mary's Catholic Church & Centre.

The presumed error is a mismatch in the middle of the curbing line within the footpath.

'Obviously one [contractor] started at one end and one started at the other end – over different production periods I presume – but I wouldn't of thought it'd be too hard to actually make them meet up in the middle,” says Shayne.

'They had one job you know, which was to lay a nice piece of curbing and they mucked it up.”

'I can't help but shake my head in wonder at the amount of money, we the tax/rate-payers are spending, and yet the contractors can't seem to get the basics right.”

The kerbing glitch has got Shayne stumped.

'I've got no explanation or no logical reason to see why that would have to happen like that unless someone had made a mistake.”

Others have their theories, however.

'One comment I had from somebody was that it could be a pot plant or a grass passing lane because it's got wider at that [mid] point and the grasses can over take each other!”

So what does council have to say for this concreted gem?

'The area shown on the photograph of the stepped kerbing is an error that will be fixed at the cost of the contractor,” says Tauranga City Council's director of transport Brendan Bisley.

'Council is focused on completing all remaining works on Cameron Rd and will come back to complete any defects once the overall contract is complete.

'The irony of it is that they're building all these big improvements and roadworks and I would've thought it'd be a pretty simple matter to make something simple like that happen nicely," says Shayne.

..and do not make a fuss about it...or else the twits who authorised the work will feel obliged to fix it again at outrageous ratepayer cost and rip up what has been done. Yes it is a stuff up and doubtless the same contractors who did it will be continually employed for further work...but...lets not have Cameron Road closed for another 6 months on top of the current chaos to fix it!..maybe a large plant pot on the balls up bit will take our eye off it! :)

Give me strength!

How many other stuff ups have been discovered and not made public? Ratepayers need proof of this one being fixed and paid for by the contractor, just not good enough for Brendan to say it will happen that way, and who, by the way, is the contractor? From the debacle that is Cameron Rd and a lot more around Tga, looks like most contractors would struggle to find their way out of a paper bag. How many years now, how many more? Ha, Meremere power station construction commenced 1956, commissioned 1958. That's 2, yes two, years and back in the day a consultant was NOT hired so someone could blow their nose!

nerak makes a good point.

Meremere was built in an era when people were not afraid to take responsibility for their work and only used consultants for specialized tasks. Since then we have removed responsibility from the mix of attributes required in the rising generation (and particularly in Public Service jobs) and now it is much easier to simply get a consultant to justify what needs doing. This is going to be fixed at the contractor's expense, as it should be. But it still doesn't inspire confidence, does it?

What about the pipes? 2 contractors, each thought the other had put the pipes in. Nope. Filled in, only to be ripped up again.
