Part-time bus only lanes for Cameron Road

Operating times are now confirmed for part-time bus lanes on Cameron Road.

"Providing part-time only bus lanes is one of the ways the Building our future - Cameron Road, Te Papa project," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

"[This] will help address Tauranga's growth, revitalise a key part of our city, and provide more transport options so people don't have to be so car dependent."

Council says these are all things the community has said they would like.

In agreement with Bay of Plenty Regional Council, peak-time bus lane and car parking hours on Cameron Road between Elizabeth Street and Sixteenth Avenue have now been confirmed.

When the part time bus lanes become operational later this year, they will operate from 7am to 9am heading into the city - on the western side of the road, and 4pm to 6pm heading out of the city - on the eastern side of the road, Monday to Friday.

At all other times, including weekends, the part-time bus lanes will continue to be used for parking and loading, with time limits in place.

"Within the next 10 years, as bus usage and demand increases, these lanes will transition to become dedicated bus lanes.

"Council will proactively enforce illegal use of the bus lanes and infringements will result in fines of up to $150."

I don't think so

What was that statement...? "Within the next 10 years, as bus usage and demand increases,". Within the next 10 years...? What will people want to get on a loser-cruiser for during the day? Anyone who has travelled will be able to tell you that the CBD of most cities has a few coffee shops and lunchbars and the locals only go there when they absolutely have no other option. It's fast becoming a fact that the only redeeming feature of Tauranga is the Harbour and the fact that it's visited by cruise ships.

“Let’s Get Real’ how about you do just that. Firstly how do you know what people will want in the next ten years? Granted at the moment no one would want to get on a bus with stops closed off etc. However this may well change going into the future. As to what you term “loser cruiser” how arrogant. I am one of those “losers” you refer to who bus because I can’t drive. There are others in wheelchairs, elderly and for whatever reason car-less. While some who take buses are losers there are just as many sitting one to a car in banked up traffic. Don’t assume.

What a joke!!

Bus usage may well increase slightly over the next 10 years, but nowhere near as much as car use and other vehicles, as the population grows. So, my question is, what are the Council (and Government) going to do to assist the movement of increased vehicles over that same period? How about doing the sensible thing and giving that space back to cars, which represent the highest percentage of people movement!!! Stop trying to force us out of cars and on to public transport.

Revitalise a key part of our city, community would like, bus usage and demand increases, I don’t know who they are trying to convince. It used to take my wife 17 minutes to get home from work, now 1 hour. That’s progress. My suggestion is to demolish all of the shops between Devonport, Cameron, Elizabeth & Spring St and build a multi level shopping complex and car parking.

Questions

I’d like to know - will the council put their money where their mouths are and all commit to travelling everywhere by bus? I see so many TCC cars around, I’ll expect that to stop. What’s the point in not having the bus lane operating during afternoon school hours? How can the council explain how the original estimate of $20m has reached five times this amount?

Do you honestly believe that it's right and fitting for ratepayers to be paying MILLIONS a year to subsidise your transport needs...? There are far cheaper options available in our modern society which could be taken up by council to suit your needs. When you hop on your Loser-cruiser, how many others are occupying the 39 seats available and how many are forced to stand during school hours? We have 39 seats available until about 10pm every day of the year, on every route and every 30 minutes or so. Don't you think that if people saw it as a viable option, that they would be using it now...? And please stay safe out there... It will only take a few days for the losers to work out that security has been withdrawn at the bus hubs in town and Bayfair.

Greerton

Well part time bus lanes will do nothing for a lot of Cameron road as it's single lane anyway. Often have to travel through Greerton to Pyes pa road and it's thirty minutes to forty minutes . Route K no better trying to get through Tauriko roundabouts and up to Pyes Pa road . So buses will still be caught up in traffic and still having to change buses takes so long . So car is still the only real option at this point with shopping etc
