Tairua's iconic red telephone box has been destroyed in a ram raid theft overnight.

Police responded to reports of a theft of an ATM from a phone box on Main Road, Tairua around 3.30am on Saturday.

"A vehicle was used to gain access, and take the ATM," says a police spokesperson.

Police are following lines of enquiry into the incident.

The incident comes on the heels of a recent ram-raid on July 5 in Thames where five vehicles caused thousands of dollars damage to Goldfields Mall and property was taken from several shops.

......a 'sickness' amongst some perhaps since covid which makes people believe they need to screw up other peoples lives and interfere with property with no guilt whatsoever....and sadly for at least the last near six years little or no payback for their crime....the answer is surely to make these almost humans accountable for their actions...but is it too late and is the genie 'out of the bottle' forever in New Zealand?...I hope not....I cannot believe that anyone is that desperate, but moreso a desire to simply be a a*****e...why?...''cos they can!....the answer in part is to toughen up the laws but it's up to us to take responsibility for our actions and those we know committing this crap,....does anyone care?....
