Snowfall: Desert Road closed

Heavy snow in the Central North Island has forced roading authorities to close the Desert Road.

The Desert Road is closed for a third day in a row.

The Desert Road is currently closed due to a truck becoming stuck in icy conditions, says a statement from police this morning.

"Police were called about 5.10am. 

"Motorists are advised to delay travel until the road can be cleared."

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency says the road is closed due to snow, State Highway 1 is closed between Rangipo and Waiouru. Plan your journey accordingly, allowing extra time for travel.

Detour route

For northbound traffic turn left onto SH49, right onto SH4, right onto SH47, right onto SH46 and then left back onto SH1. Reverse for southbound. Please note, this detour will add at least 40 minutes to your journey time.

Road Snowfall Warning

A snowfall warning has been issued by the MetService for today.

In the nine hours from midnight Thursday to 9am Friday, snow is expected to develop above 600 metres overnight, and 5 to 10 cm of snow may settle on the Deseret Road.
