Man to appear in court following assaults

A 24-year old man is due to appear in court this week after being taken into custody following two assaults and disorderly behaviour in Waihi.  Police responded to reports of a man with a weapon  - not a firearm - in Waihi around 11am on Saturday morning. 

"It appears the person was involved in two assaults and wilful damage to two residential properties," says a police spokesperson.

"One person received minor to moderate injuries and one person received moderate to serious injuries after being assaulted at two separate locations in Waihi."

Police say one incident occurred on Montrose Road and one incident occurred on Tauranga Road at a commercial premises.   Reports of wilful damage included a broken window and a broken security camera from object thrown.   The man was arrested on the intersection of Gilmour street and Johnston Street around 11.30am after attempting to flee police on foot.  The  24-year-old is due to appear in Hamilton District Court this week. Charges are being considered.
