It’s time to feel the spring in your step, don a yellow hi-viz, and give a couple of hours to help sell some fresh daffodils in support of Daffodil Day.
This year the message is that “no one should face cancer alone” and volunteers are needed to chip in some time and take part in the street collections around the Bay of Plenty area on August 25 and 26.
“We will be selling fresh daffodils at selected sites, as well as lapel pins and pens,” says Cancer Society area coordinator Olivia Fellows-Ford.
Why a daffodil?
The iconic daffodil is recognised around the world as a symbol of hope for people impacted by cancer.
The daffodil is the first flower of spring. Bringing light after cold, dark winter days and the hope of a new beginning. It has become a symbol for people experiencing the winter of cancer diagnosis and treatment, finding hope of a new life ahead.
While the actual day for Daffodil Day this year is August 25, Olivia says street collections will also be held on August 26.
“We need some volunteers to help us please,” says Olivia.
“All we need is people to give two hours of their time. There are a bunch of locations and times to work with –and we will provide everything needed for the site.”
Volunteers can choose a two-hour slot between 10am and 4pm on either Friday August 25 or Saturday August 26.
For Tauranga the street collection locations are:
- 11th Avenue Plaza
- Bay Audiology Mount Maunganui (Downtown)
- Bunnings - Mount Maunganui
- Countdown - Bureta Park
- Countdown - Te Puke
- Greerton Library
- John's Photo Pharmacy
- New World - Brookfield
- New World Gate Pa
- Pak n Save Tauranga

“We need all the help we can get this year for Daffodil Day,” says Olivia.
