The Bay of Plenty team was the most successful of the day with all eight contending surfers entered in the competition progressing through to the second round of their respective divisions.

Contest director Ben Kennings says the team showed an outstanding performance for their age range.

'They surfed really well. For them to all get through was pretty exceptional.”

Surfers were competing in gusty westerly wind conditions with the swell reaching 1.5m.

During the past six years Bay of Plenty has won the event four times out of six.

The Gisborne team are current holders of the national title and Bay of Plenty are set to claim back their winnings in the October round of the competition.

'I think that it is early days but on the day they are looking like they can do it.”

Bay of Plenty winners of each division were awarded to Josh Taylor and Luca Cressy, surfing in the under-18 boys' division with Matt Hansen and Jordan Griffin winning the under-16 boys set.

Jordan was one of the highest heat scorers of the day scoring 11.47 in his under-16 set.

All surfers are given a second chance format giving surfers the opportunity to perform once more in the main draw if they progress through a repecharge round.

The New Zealand Junior Surfing Squad is announced shortly after the event making performances in front of selectors and team management vital for those with an eye on selection in the New Zealand Team.

Ben says there are a few Mount Maunganui surfers who have improved throughout the competition and may be eligible for a spot in the New Zealand Junior team.

'They are looking promising.”

The chosen junior team to represent New Zealand team will travel to Nicaragua for the ISA World Championships in July 2013.

A total of eight boys and girls are chosen to compete in the under-18 and under-16 division of the ISA World Championships.
