Western Bay of Plenty District Council will roll out the welcome mat for all newcomers during Welcoming Week 2023, set to run from September 1 to September 10.

Welcoming Week celebrates the growing movement of communities that fully embrace newcomers from abroad. It shines a light on the individuals, groups and organisations, who work to ensure everyone feels supported.

The Western Bay district is diverse, with 19.5 per cent of the population born overseas, according to Census, 2018.

Western Bay’s community and strategic relationships manager Jodie Rickard says council is teaming up with community groups to create events that are all about giving newcomers a friendly welcome.

“Many of us can relate to the feeling of being new, whether in a city, a neighbourhood, school, or workplace.

“Our Welcoming Week events are a chance to connect, share stories, and build a sense of belonging for everyone in our diverse community. We’re encouraging anyone – new or not – to get out and attend.”
