Harbour ferry launches

The first harbour ferry service between Tauranga and Mount Maunganui in more than five years launched this morning.

The ferry, run by Omokoroa-Matakana barge operators Tauranga Water Transport, will initially operate a five-day per week Wednesday to-Sunday service, before being expanded to a daily service for summer.

The first harbour ferry in a decade launched this morning.

Owner Glen Proctor is optimistic about the viability of the service, which he hopes will eventually run year round between Salisbury Wharf and the Tauranga waterfront.

Glen has had strong support from Tourism BOP for the service and expects strong demand in cruise ship season.

'We will get a good feel for the demand in October and November and expect to be beginning the full daily summer service in December.”

A few people were lining up to get the first ferry across at 9am, while more people had booked for the 11am crossing.

The ferry boat is a 30 foot Naiad that is licenced to carry 23 people and was previously used as a Picton water taxi.

It will be skippered by Glen's son Michael – in what is a growing family water transport business, which will soon also include a 36 foot catamaran offering various tourism services.

The catamaran, which is being built by Kim and Colin Bertelsen's Mount Maunganui family boat-builder Alloy Cats NZ Ltd, will be ready for service by the end of October.

The cat will offer golf tours to Omokoroa, take visitors to Matakana Island for tours, as well as other charter tours out to Mayor Island and around the harbour. Glen is installing a video camera under the catamaran to watch stingrays to offer 'some interesting entertainment”.

The service will run hourly over the day from 9am-4pm, with services leaving Tauranga at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm, while it will embark from Salisbury Wharf at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm.

Adults are $10 and children $5.

I hope this goes well for you. And also hope Tourism BOP do not again offer a free bus shuttle to Tauranga for the Cruse Ship passengers. as a taxi operator we found it very hard to compete with a free service.

Memories shared with grandkids

Best wishes to Glen Proctor and family. Now, where are the grandkids to re-live a big chunk of my childhood with a trip across the harbour to the beach! In the 50's my parents took five children to the Mount beaches by ferry. From opposite the Tauranga Girls College mother pushed my younger brother in a pram to the Ferry (Faulkner's) then from Pilot Bay to the main beach. My dad rode his bike, repeating the trip 2-3 times, taking us in turns on his carrier. At the beach a rare treat was father hiring a 'black inflatable' on which we took turns riding the waves to shore. A birthday might include a beach 'donkey ride'.

But...I do think it is a bit pricey when you can catch a bus over there for a couple of buck...

The free shuttle service you are complaining about was run by the gift and souvenir business called Fancy That and its passenger service provider. In no way did anybody else fund this service. Tourism Bay of Plenty and council opposed this service and have made it impossible to continue because they could not ask for 10% of nothing. The main benefactor of this service was the Tauranga CBD to the tune of 40,000 spending customers whom were noticed by their absence last season.Fancy That are waiting to hear if council will give them their support and hope to be able to continue this service once again this season. This is called free enterprise and council really should not be involved but have been in the past to protect Tourism Bay Of Plenty to gain a 180% increase in their turnover last season at the expense of the CBD and Fancy That and their operator who put a huge amount of time and money into this service to make it happen

yippppppppppeeeeeeeee I hope the full support of locals and visitors goes behind Glen and his business same goes for Fancy that TCC should not be interfering in private business this includes competing against it thats just dumb and Im happy to pay ten bucks just to have a nice day out Its a free world I can always catch the cheap bus back if I spend too much money in the city and if business goes well he may offer a locals special who knows?? just get out there and support him
