With summer expected the one of the hottest on record, Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa are expected to be the most visited places in the Bay Of Plenty region this summer.
Weekend patrols, daily rosters and lots of hour training with all the volunteers are some of the measures the lifeguard services have adopted to ensure all the tourists can go back to their homes after having a great time on the beaches.
“We have over 120 voluntary lifeguards rostered on for weekend patrols over the summer which start on Labour Weekend and finish at Easter,” says the spokesperson of Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service spokesperson Matt Hunt.
However, the measurements of the lifeguard services will not be effective without the active participation of the community.
Matt says they will always be the first line to prevent any circumstances that threaten a relaxed family or friend's holiday at the beach.
“We are gearing up for another busy season on the beach. It would be great for beachgoers to remember to use sunblock and make sure they have plenty of water to keep hydrated. Also, make sure to talk to lifeguards about the beach and ocean conditions and always swim between the flags.”

With the sudden changes in the weather, locals started jumping in the water early this year and, despite not having registered any incidents, the ocean currents and the hot days are always a big concern for the lifeguard services.
“We want to people keep in mind that the red and yellow flags show the safest area to swim. And are the lifeguards who understand the local swell and tide conditions.
“Too many people get into trouble in the water because they overestimate their abilities and underestimate the conditions. We just want to invite swimmers to know their limits.”
