More than 50 volleyball players have hit Mount Main Beach during the first Bay of Plenty Secondary School senior volleyball championship.

Girls and boys from all over the Bay of Plenty met at the beach early Sunday morning for the first championship of the season 2023 -2024.

The championship has been here for a couple of years and after a cold start to the season, it’s good to be back at the beach, says Volleyball Bay of Plenty spokesperson Tymara Cox.

“It is good to see all these young school players here at the beach enjoying the good weather, the beach and playing the sport what the love the most.”

Players, coaches and parents from all around the Bay of Plenty have met at the beach for the first tournament of the season.

“The kids have not played on the beach for a while, so they must be a little rusty, but now is a good time to start playing again, sunny day and lots of energy at the courts today,” says Otūmoetai College coach Tom Collier.

This kind of event is just brilliant, says Warren Douglas, a parent of one of the players from Papamoa College.

“The tournament is really well organised and the kids are having lots of fun, we arrived at the beach at around 8am, as my son is playing and also on duty as volleyball referee, so we had time to watch him playing and also to enjoy the beach and the amazing day.”

So we have parking issues and congestion yet another event is planned in an already busy place . Why does every event have to be at the Mount ? How about giving someone else a turn ?
