Motorists travelling on State Highway 2 through the Karangahake Gorge, and on State Highway 29 over the Kaimai range, are experiencing a long drive home this afternoon following the long holiday weekend.

A SunLive reader reports that the traffic is "chocka" along State Highway 1 out of Auckland and "chocka" through the Karangahake Gorge.

There are also delays being experienced between Whiritoa and Waihi on State Highway 25 with traffic at a near standstill at times on Monday afternoon.

Paeroa Towing Services has given a live traffic update while on the job.

"I'm on State Highway 25. There's a traffic jam from the gorge back to Waihi turn-off. It's stop/start from the windies or from the gorge end all the way back to Waihi.

"Coming from Whangamata from the gorge all the way to Waihi is pretty bad. Haven't been caught in traffic here like this before."

He goes on to say he's already had a "blowout" job to take care of for a vehicle owner.

"I've gone to pick up a vehicle that had four flat tyres. They were in an altercation last night, somebody stabbed their tyres.

"If you're travelling today, just have patience. It could be a long day on the road."

Traffic over the Kaimai range on SH29 is also reported to be slow moving.

Motorists are advised to use patience.

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
