State Highway 1 is now open following a fatal crash in the Bay of Plenty Police district.

Emergency services were called to a crash involving two vehicles on SH1, north of Turangi, at 6.45pm.

Police have confirmed that one person has died.

"They were initially in a critical condition and sadly passed away at the scene," says a police spokesperson.

"One other person has sustained moderate injuries.

"Worksafe and the Serious Crash Unit have been advised.

"An investigation into the crash is underway."

The road was closed for some time to allow the SCU to investigate the scene, but Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency reports the highway is now open.
