Update, 12.12pm: Emergency services are responding to the scene of a crash near Tauranga Harbour Bridge.

"Police are responding to reports of a single-vehicle crash on Te Awanui Drive, reported at 11.35am," says a police spokesperson.

"It appears the driver may have had a medical event, and is reported to be in a serious condition."

Police are currently assisting with traffic flow in the area.

Motorists are advised to expect delays.

Earlier, 11.37am: Heavy traffic is being reported over the Tauranga Harbour Bridge.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says there appears to be a crash on Te Awanui Drive, near the Tauranga Bridge Marina.

"Traffic is stalled in the lane heading over the bridge towards Mount Maunganui.

"People should avoid the area if possible or expect delays."
