The Edge radio station is planning to undress the first day of summer with the help of more than 413 naked people in an attempt to break a world record at Mount Maunganui beach.
On Saturday, December 1 The Edge is calling for Bay of Plenty residents to face off against Canterbury in an effort to break the world record for the greatest number of people to skinny dip at a single venue.
On December 1 The Edge is asking people to attempt to break the world record for skinny dipping on Mount Maunganui beach.
The event is expected to take place around 2pm in Mount Maunganui but that time and exact location is yet to be confirmed.
According to The Guinness Book of World Records, the current world record was achieved by a mid-summer skinny dip in South Wales in the United Kingdom on June 19 last year.
The skinny dip was attempted by a total of 413 people.
The Edge marketing manager Emily Hancox says the radio station is awaiting confirmation from Tauranga City Council before the event officially goes ahead.
'We are just working through the finer details.”
Emily says The Edge aims to use the event to raise money for the Cancer Society as well as celebrate the first day of summer.
She says the skinny dip will take place at the same time in Christchurch.
'We are going to kind of try and battle off Tauranga and the Mount versus Christchurch.”
'It's just a nice opportunity to get Canterbury out, feeling good about themselves and having a fun time.”
The Edge breakfast team will have further announcements closer to event day in December.

Shouldn't be too hard to find 414 attention seeking idiots. I won't be there - it's a disgrace.

If this commercial promotion is to proceed, at best, I suggest it utilises the 'unofficial unclad bathing, sun-seeking portion of beach' in early Papamoa. I'd be surprised if the Cancer Society supported an event that celebrates nakedness in the mid afternoon sun with the associated risks, potential to offend and wrong messages this would send.
