Longline and kontiki fishing devices can be used anywhere along the beach, as long as they aren’t within 300m of any flagged lifeguard area.
However, additional restrictions apply over the summer period.
The Council’s bylaws state that regardless of the method used for deployment, longline fishing is not permitted between the hours of 10am and 5pm from December 15 to February 15.
Fishing is not permitted within 300 metres of any flagged lifeguard area, states the bylaws.
“These restrictions are intended to protect the public from nuisances and risks such as fishing hooks,” says Tauranga City Council regulation monitoring team leader Stuart Goodman.
“The beach, especially the Papamoa area, is becoming increasingly populated.
“What may have been a secluded fishing spot is now a family beach destination.

“There will be some personal responsibility for anyone who causes an injury through reckless behaviour e.g. launching a kontiki on a crowded beach.
“Council have seizure and prosecution powers in relation to this bylaw, which was made under the Local Government Act.
“To date Council has taken an educational approach with most people abiding by the restrictions and being respectful to other beach users.
“No one wants to see someone injured, these rules are intended to protect beach users from potential fishing related risks.
This summer, refer to the bylaws and contact Stuart at 07 577 7000 with any issues you may observe.
