Wairoa cycleway official blessing planned for 2024

The cycleway is now open for all to use.

Now that the Wairoa Cycleway is open, Tauranga City Council is reminding people to keep safety front of mind.

The last 800-metre section of the new cycleway, linking Ōmokoroa to Tauranga, takes people under the Wairoa Bridge, and past the Waimarino side of the road to a new signalised crossing (traffic lights) at the top of the hill.

An official opening and blessing is planned for early next year, once all works are completed. And all road users are reminded to look out for each other as people get used to more activity in the area and sharing the new facility.

Tauranga City Council team leader, Accessible Streets, Karen Hay says “we are seeing a lot of people already using the cycleway and urge users to keep safety front of mind, now and into the future.

“It’s important to be aware that people who cycle and pedestrians are likely to be on the pathway so please travel carefully.

“We also ask the community to keep to the clearly marked cycleway, as neighbouring land on both sides belongs to the local hapū and it’s important to respect their privacy.

“We look forward to the official opening and blessing of the cycleway in February and are very grateful for the ongoing support from Wairoa Hapū.”

With the high volume of users, the cycleway will continue to be monitored over the coming weeks to ensure further changes are not needed.

The cycleway enables people to cross State Highway 2 to Carmichael Road and connect to cycle paths at Gordon Carmichael Reserve to the city.

Safety reminders

People using the cycleway are reminded that the correct route is to use the signalised crossing above the Wairoa Bridge.

People using the cycleway are urged to take care and slow down as people get used to sharing the new facility.

People on bikes should be mindful of other users and slow down while on the cycleway, as well as while travelling under the bridge.

Drivers are asked to be alert to more activity in the area, the reduced speed limit and the new roading design, including the signalised pedestrian crossing (traffic lights) at the top of SH2.

These lights are now operational and will pause traffic for 13-20 seconds when activated.

50 kph area

As the bridge is now safer 50 kph then if I were a cyclist I would stay on the road as it's a short distance and cycling on public road is as far as i know quite legal. Traffic will be slower and at computer time near stationary. Drivers using the bridge are generally well behaved and patient so hopefully everyone will just be calm and share . Certainly don't expect cyclists to hold anyone up or only for seconds anyway

Blessing

Could someone please tell me why we have these blessings, and what they actually achieve - other than to perpetuate the blessing industry itself.

Blessing?

“We look forward to the official opening and blessing of the cycleway in February and are very grateful for the ongoing support from Wairoa Hapū.” Fair enough. A democracy should allow the indulgence of all religious views, provided they harm no-one. But, I, for one, resent the fact that my rates will be used to pay for a "Blessing" which speaks to me of mediaeval superstition and has no place in my life, or beliefs. Will everybody be required to turn widdershins and light a candle afterwards, also? I respect the right of Maori to have their blessing but I DON'T expect to have to pay for it. How much will this cost us? If it is the "Blessing" itself that is "important to Hapu" why don't they do it for free? We are living in the 21st century. It is time we grew up.

Why

Does it have to be blessed and by whom? What will this blessing achieve apart from getting people out off bed who are not normally morning people and who don't appear to work normal hours, if they work at all. Its all becoming a bit of a joke.

Hmmmm

At what cost is this official opening and Blessing and to who?
Is it really necessary?
Will there be one to hold Cameron Road up a bit longer too?

all got a bit daft, and heaven forbid we fork out for this one, let alone plenty more. I know, let's bless the bloody cones! Lemme see, I can think of hundreds of things wot need to be blessed, and TCC aint on the list. Better bless all those extra traffic lights, while you're at it.

Hmmm...

first the marae refuse the cycle lane to go on the same side as the marae, so we have ended up with an underpass needing to be built. Even though the cycle lane would have been on public property. This is the real story that needs to be reported...

New Business

I think I might start a "Blessing" Business as I'm sure it pays well, and it seem this business has plenty of work that's paid for by the taxpayers.
