The midnight fireworks on New Year's Eve in Tauranga were a spectacular sight despite the terrible weather.

Tauranga watched in excitement as they welcomed the new year.

"We were pleased that, despite the weather, we were able to launch the fireworks at 9.30pm and then again at midnight," says Tauranga City Council venues and events manager, Nelita Byrne.

"Unfortunately the weather resulted in the cancellation of the Community New Years Eve Events but thankfully we were able to launch the fireworks from 3 sites at 9.30pm and again at midnight.

"The fireworks were a spectacular display, lighting the city sky to celebrate the start of the New Year.

"Tauranga is a popular holiday destination so the city was busy which would have meant the fireworks were visible to a lot of people from vantage points across the city."

The bad weather didn't stop Tauranga from celebrating the new year and having a great time.

Out of interest who actually pays for all these spectacular displays. I hope not TCC because we sure cannot afford to be sending our money up in smoke like that but if it was could Sunlive give us a cost breakdown for each venue please?
