An overnight closure is being planned for the Hewletts Road flyover.

Flexible median safety barriers will be installed along the middle of State Highway 2 from Spur Avenue over the Bayfair flyover as part of the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Baypark to Bayfair Link (Bay Link) project from Sunday, January 21.

The barriers will link up with the existing Tauranga Eastern Link barriers and improve safety by preventing collisions between traffic travelling on SH2 to/from Hewletts Road and the Bayfair flyover.

A temporary closure of Hewletts Road flyover and lane closures on SH2 between the Hewletts Road flyover and the Bayfair flyover will be required at night while this work is underway, says a spokesperson for the roading agency/

This work is currently scheduled as follows:

-Sunday 21 January and Monday 22 January (from approximately 7pm to 6am each night) the SH2 Hewletts Road flyover will be fully closed in both directions. A detour via the Golf Road roundabout will apply.

-From Tuesday 23 January to Thursday 24 January (from approximately 7pm to 6am each night) lane closures will apply on SH2 between the Hewletts Road flyover and the Bayfair flyover. A lane in each direction will remain available for traffic.

"Other night work will also be happening elsewhere on the Bay Link project during this week, with closures varying from night to night depending on site requirements and progress."

"This work is weather dependent. If it is delayed because of weather or other unforeseen issues, it will be carried out on the next suitable night/s.

"Once installation of the flexible median barriers gets underway, vehicles will not be able to cross SH2/Maunganui Road between Spur Ave and the Bayfair flyover. On-road parking on SH2/Maunganui Road will remain unchanged.

"If you are travelling while this work is underway, please allow extra time, follow detours and drive with caution through the area. NZTA thanks drivers, local residents and businesses for their patience."

Two flyovers are decades in the making and still not completed... why not go to 3of3 out of action.
