A popular Tauranga business that has delighted tourists and locals for 30 years is closing down as the centre of town is “dead”, despite having the fastest growing population in New Zealand.
Curiosity started in Thames in 1993 and moved to Tauranga's CBD around 1995.
Famously owned by a prominent local, Dennis Pederson, fondly known as Deno, Curiosity couldn’t have been more different to its next door neighbour, selling bongs and buddha incense holders and piercing bodies well before crystal-loving Gen Z were born..
After Deno was killed in a motorbike accident in 2012, the shop passed to his friend Levi Phillips.
Levi now lives in Australia with his partner Rhozie Edmonds and their two children.
"I always loved the shop. I used to go in as a young teenager," says Levi.
"I said to Deno! If he ever wanted to sell that I’d be keen. Then he passed away and the opportunity came up, so we bought it."
When asked why the have decided to close down, Levi says it was a hard decision and they kept the shop open for as long as they could.
He says the decision comes from mainly the changes council have made, like deciding to turn Wharf Street into an eat street.
"We had major issues with the street being revamped twice, loosing the car parks and permanent closing of the street. Tauranga Council has destroyed this city."
Tauranga’s central city businesses have been plagued by construction work. Supplied / Stuff. When Curiosity announced it was closing on its public Facebook page, people were “sad” and said the city wouldn’t be the same.
“The end of an era. Due to the nature and character of staff and customers, it would be hands down the most cosmic store anywhere in NZ. Would call in to hear Deno’s true story of the glass vases for sale in the store but it was so elaborate the tale would change when the next customer asked,” says Shayne Thomas.
Many locals have memories of the store forever etched or marked on their bodies with tattoos and piercings.
“Aww man I got my piercings done by Deno back in 90s and got my first proper bong there the old brown bottle bongs.. I remember one time there was this dragon ornament I really liked but couldn’t quite afford it so he gave it to me for free. Still got it as well,” says another man.
Others remembered it as their first job, saying how well staff were treated.
“Wharf St will never be the same without Curiosity. It’s a big part of Tauranga. Deno was the best boss, loved my job there back in the day so much. Now everything’s dying in the CBD,” says former employee Tanya Jones.
Many say it's their favourite shop in Tauranga, and people would come from other cities to visit. While people are sad to see it go, they understand the reasons, having witnessed the exodus of other businesses in town.
“You've done well to last so long with the disaster that is Tauranga central. Sorry to hear you're closing,” says another shopper.
Levi and Rhozie are extremely grateful for the support they have received from the community over the years.
"We would love to give a huge thank you to all our current and previous staff that have been amazing and kept the shop running. We would also love to thank all our loyal customers that have been in over the years.
"Massive Thank you to Deno! May he R.I.P."

Just one more casualty for the Commission to not care about. Yes the city is empty, yes the parking is expensive and yes it’s easy to go somewhere else. No it’s not going to improve for a few years. Roll on local elections.

Yes, they are closing and correctly put the blame in TCC's corner. This the case for many businesses in the CBD and more will follow. Parking of course is a massive issue that TCC ignores and continues to eliminate them 24/7.
The TCC ongoing revamps have merely worsened as each new and wonderful "revitalisation plan" scheme, dream or whatever oozes out of TCC on an ongoing basis with yet more millions of spending attached.
TCC planning and thinking is, 24/7 a disaster, no matter what it is for or about, there is a mess that will follow, just like night follows day.
Your welcome says TCC

We have the best plans, sorry, best most expensive plans you asked for, oh sorry....the best most expensive plans you never wanted but we give them to you.
Oh what happens when all the businesses leave ?
Oh why would they leave, we still get paid no problem at TCC
Never mind...

$300 million will re-vitalize the CBD... It has nothing to do with people.

Thanks to Tauranga City Council our city is in an unstoppable spiral of death and dying.
No shopping no parking and what's up with the roading? Closing off roads etc.
30 years ago with a way smaller population the city center was a hive of activity.
Even after dark the city was alive with bars and clubs!
What is there to do in Tauranga now?
WOW

Curiosity is not a store I have been in, though it is not good that it is closing and possibly be an empty shop with a for lease sign on the window.
Business have had it tough in the CBD due to continued multiple developments reducing access for trading.
Daily there is more business departing the CBD, one is PaperPlus in Grey St on the shop windows it says closing down, this appears to be due to end of lease and "other" factors.
This business includes NZ Post & Kiwibank.
PaperPlus is not relocating, it is closing down for good.
Postal services & Banking are the mainstay of a community mainly for the business & those living in the inner city.
Why is there no story on this??
