Tauranga council spends $4600 on unneeded signs

Paid parking signs have been popping up around Tauranga despite the council pausing plans to extend parking charges.

On Monday, contractors installed signs for paid parking on Tauranga’s city fringe.

Around 22 signs were erected on Monmouth St, Anson St, McLean St and The Strand at a cost of $4600.

This is despite Tauranga City Council delaying plans to extend the paid parking from Third Avenue up to Arundel Street, and from McLean Street up to Monmouth Street.

The charges were meant to come into force on February 26, but a decision to delay them was made at a meeting in November.

Commission chair Anne Tolley said there was a “huge amount” of community concern about the parking.

The commission wasn't convinced of a case for extending the paid parking in the CBD when there was still a lot of parks available, said Tolley.

“Normally you put paid parking in when you're trying to manage [spaces] and get turnover.

“We've got good turnover in the centre of the city, so there's no need to try and extend that at this stage.”

Council parking strategy manager Reece Wilkinson says the job for erecting the signs was logged in early October before the commission postponed the extension.

“It has slipped through the system and the signs are being removed today.”

The cost of the installation is included in the council’s general maintenance work but worked out to be around $4600, including GST, he says.

Wilkinson says the council would know the exact number of signs incorrectly installed by the end of the day when removal was complete.

The commission will be reviewing the parking strategy in March.

It's not possible...

....to imagine the disbelief between the very contractors erecting the very signs only to take them away shortly after...(queue the circus clown music please)...ahh...but at least it's ONLY around $4600 plus 'unforseen' blowout costs so probably double that...it's just not possible to remain rational about such a happening, but for the sake of publication...well.....just as well TCC haven't got authority over significant ratepayer spending have they?...OMG.....THEY HAVE !!!

How?

How can it 'slip through the system'?
The signs are used to justify a parking ticket. They are integral to parking enforcement. These ones just 'slipped through the system' did they?
I wonder if that (pathetic) defense would hold up in trying to get off a parking infringement? I'm sorry but the idea of looking at parking signs just slipped my mind. That makes everything okay so just forget about the ticket.
What a load of dribble. Get your act together TCC. Whose going to pay for the removal of the signage, whose going to pay for YOUR bulls up . . . hey, what about the ratepayers. We're absolutely loaded and more than happy to help. HOD should be paying out of own pocket. This is totally unacceptable. (With removal), 7k here, 7k there . . . Oh well, who cares - THE RATEPAYERS DO!!!

It's a Sign

Yet another sign (or 22 signs) that we need a democratically elected council. Roll on Saturday 20 July 2024.
