Additional supplies of free RATs until June

Additional supplies of Covid-19 rapid antigen tests (RATs) will enable continued free testing for the public and health sector through to the end of June 2024, Health Minister Dr Shane Reti has announced.

“New Zealand’s current inventory of RATs expires before the end of March and the ability to keep providing free stock would have come to an end,” Dr Reti says.

“Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora will procure supplies to enable the ongoing provision of free RATs through until June 30.

“These free RATs will be available through the established national network of distribution providers, comprising of health providers and some pharmacies.

“Officials will provide me with further advice on Covid-19 testing and supply requirements from July 1 onwards.

“Many other countries have already decreased the wide distribution of free RATs, however this approach will ensure New Zealand continues to have good stocks of tests available as we enter winter.

“Health New Zealand is purchasing a further five million RATs, these costs can be met from existing budgets for Covid-19 services.”

Its money wasted and should be spent on more important health requirements

I would normally share that opinion, however, the virus has shown itself once again in our family and it's a lot easier to make different arrangements when you know that it's not "just a cold".

We want it gone.

Sadly, because we want it gone, it is very easy to decide that if we ignore it, it will go away. I had someone in a queue the other day who I had to gently remind not to break social distancing. Covid is still real (whether we like it or not) and it makes sense to observe at least the minimal precautions. RAT testing is an essential part of it. And it should be free. Be aware of what you are touching (like supermarket trolleys) and wash your hands. I've had it once, and it was nowhere near as bad as I was led to believe, but I'd still prefer not to have it again...

I hear you but unfortunately we already have them and cannot return them so may as well put them to good use.
Personally, I got Covid19 REALLY badly and I will certainly use them because I sure do not want it again and I'm happy to do it to keep you and others safe.
