A person has died after a fire in the Bay of Plenty.

Emergency services were called to a Bridge Street property in Ōpōtiki about 2.20am.

A police spokesperson says the single-storey dwelling was fully engulfed when crews arrived.

"A man was located deceased at the scene.

"Enquiries into the cause of the fire are under way."
