Bridge divided battle

The Bay of Plenty Cricket sub-association Attrill Cup will have a new name engraved on the trophy that dates back over eight decades – when the two remaining rounds of this season's competition are played out at Ferguson Park in Tauranga at the weekend.

There will be an extra urgency, as the players look to impress the Bay of Plenty selectors, who will announce the Bay of Plenty Fergus Hickey team after the conclusion of play on Sunday afternoon.

The key game on Saturday will be the match-up between close neighbours Tauranga and the combined team of Mount Maunganui and Te Puke.

While both sides now play under the banner of the Western Bay sub-association, the two teams are historic archrivals, who will continue to fight out Western Bay representative supremacy.

To give the game an extra edge, the two combatants will take first round victories into the clash on Ferguson Park number three.

While many of the players meet regularly in a social environment, there is likely to be no quarter asked for, or given, when Tauranga square off against the combined side.

There is also likely to be just as much pride on the line, in the other Saturday game, when Eastern Bay of Plenty meet Rotorua.

In the solitary Attrill Cup match played last season, the Eastern Bay side relieved Rotorua of the prized trophy, in low scoring game. Eastern Bay defended a modest 107 runs when they bowled the home team out for just 96.

On Sunday the winner of the Tauranga verses Mount and Te Puke will be in the box seat as the only team with an unbeaten record. Tauranga will meet Eastern Bay of Plenty with the combined side squaring off against Rotorua.
