Road rehabilitation night works in the Western Bay of Plenty on State Highway 2 get underway with surveying tonight at Te Karaka Stream bridge.
Due to weather – there has been a change to the timing of night closures.
Road rehabilitation work will take place on SH2 between Barrett Rd and Te Karaka Dr between 8pm and 5am for 3 nights from Monday 4 March to Thursday 7 March and Sunday 10 March (weather permitting).
Stop/stop traffic management will be needed.
During this time there will be a one-hour traffic hold with a 10-minute traffic release to allow 60m sections to be milled and resurfaced.
Road users can expect significant delays during these works.
Temporary speed limits will be in place during the day.
The updated schedule is as follows:
- Monday 4 March: 8pm -5am – Stop/Go (with potentially some Stop/Stop of 5 mins at a time)
- Tuesday 5 March: 8pm -5am – Stop/Stop (1 hour with 10 mins release)
- Wednesday 6 March: 8pm -5am – Stop/Stop (1 hour with 10 mins release)
- Thursday 7 March: 8pm -5am – Stop/Stop (1 hour with 10 mins release)
- Friday 8 March – no work
- Saturday 9 March – no work
- Sunday 10 March: 8pm -5am – Stop/Stop (1 hour with 10 mins release)
- Monday 11 March: 8pm -5am – Stop/Go
- Tuesday 12 March: 8pm -5am – Stop/Go
Road users can expect significant delays during these night works.
The work is being carried out at night between 8pm and 5am to minimise disruption to road users, however delays will occur.
This work involves milling out and resurfacing the road, including new road markings.
On 5, 6, 7 and 10 March, stop/stop will be needed between Barrett Road and Te Karaka Drive.
During this time there will be a one-hour traffic hold with a 10-minute traffic release to allow 60m sections to be milled and resurfaced. There will be no works on Friday and Saturday, 8-9 March.
Temporary speed limits will be in place during the day due to the worksite having a different level to the normal road, with ramps transitioning traffic between the sites, where required.
Road works have been a feature of people’s journeys across the Bay of Plenty this summer.
Waka Kotahi understand this has been frustrating for some drivers, but making the most of the warm and dry weather means our roads will be stronger and more resilient for longer.

Frustration!

I contest that NZTA don't really give a fat rats ass about how much delay they create or how many motorists are jammed up whilst they do their thing. In the article above, they are quoted "The work is being carried out at night between 8pm and 5am to minimise disruption to road users".
So, why not work Friday 8th & Saturday 9th night, therefore finishing the work on Sunday 10th, rather than eating into another 2 days of the next working week?
The huge delays are not actually created during the overnight work, it's the reduced speed limits through the work sites during the working day that is an issue. If you really understood the frustration, then you would get in, get it done, get out.
Then we would believe you really care.
