Hunt continues for pizza man killer

Police are continuing to hunt those responsible for the death of slain Paeroa businessman Jordan Voudouris.

Police in charge of the investigation say although the enquiry has been running for four months police still have a team of 20 investigators and support staff based in Paeroa.

Tributes were placed outside Mykono's Pizza and Pasta for slain businessman Jordon Voudouris. Inset: Jordan Voudouris.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Whitehead says despite rumours circulating in the community, the offender or offenders have not been identified and no arrests have been made.

'The police have spoken to a large number of people within the Paeroa community.

'Despite the length of time the enquiry has been running, we are still identifying people with potentially valuable information who have not previously been spoken to.”
While there can be many reasons why people have not previously contacted the police, Mike says there are two common themes.

'One reason that is sometimes given is that the person was waiting for the police to come and see them, often wondering why it was taking so long.

'I restated my appeal for anyone who thinks they have information to contact the police. We may not realise they are someone who should be spoken to and if they do not make themselves known they might be missed.”

Mike says the other common thread impeding the investigation is a belief the offender has already been arrested.

'I can confirm that no one has been arrested for the homicide.

'Some of the confusion may have been as a result of other arrests that have been made. It is inevitable on an investigation of this nature that we will identify other offending during the course of our enquiries.”
He says an example of this was the recent arrest of fugitive Steven Mehrtens.

'The police have to be pragmatic when investigating serious crimes like homicides. Many of the people we speak to will live their lives in an environment that involves criminal offending.

'While the police cannot turn a blind eye to this offending, there are alternate options that mean those persons do not have to be arrested or taken before the courts.”

Mike says people should feel free to talk to police without getting themselves or their friends and family in trouble.

He says anyone willing to assist with the investigation can do so with confidence they will not be compromised.

'Even for someone who was closely associated to the homicide there are options, provided they are not a principal offender.

'The enquiry is still being staffed by personnel drawn from the wider Waikato. Some staff travel daily from as far afield as Cambridge and Hamilton. Until recently the team has been supplemented by a small number of investigators from other centres.”

Mike says the team remains strongly committed to solving Jordan's murder and has the support of the Waikato District management to provide the on-going investigative resources to achieve this.
