One person is currently facing assault charges in relation to an "unprovoked attack" in Tauranga.

In a statement released today, police say they are working to identify group of people who they believe, alongside others, can assist with officers' enquiries into an assault on The Strand, Sunday, March 3.

Police have released CCTV footage in the hope that someone may know who the people are.

The incident occurred at around 3.30am where a large group of people are believed to have approached two people, leaving them with serious injuries.

The offenders are not known to the victims, and this attack appears to be unprovoked, says a police spokesperson.

"Police have reviewed CCTV footage and conducted a number of enquiries to locate those involved.

"An 18-year-old man has been apprehended and is facing charges of assault with intent to injure, and is due to reappear in the Tauranga District Court on March 18.

"If you recognise any of the below people or have information that may assist in our investigation, please contact Police on 105 and reference file number: 240304/9616.

"Alternatively you can report any information anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."

No wonder no one wants to visit downtown Tauranga, when incidents like this are happening.
Where are the police patrols when all this kind of behaviour is happening ? Let alone bouncers at some of these hotels on the strand.

All manly "I own the streets" bravado while they have the numbers, but as is normally the case, individually, they are just a bunch of timid, loosers who feel downtrodden and life's everybody else's fault bar their own.

Pay our Police more money .
Employ extra cops to get ahead of attrition rates.
Give the NZ public the safety and security they deserve for paying so much in taxes.
Alternatively send all MPs out with a few rookie cops on a friday/ Saturday night to "engage" with these types of people.

Heroes.

I hope we will be given more details as this progresses. Can it be understandable that it is now OK for groups of people to vent their own frustration and anger, in violence against people they don't even know? Show what a hero you are by beating up a stranger? If ANYONE can be a target, without provocation, then we are no longer safe, and Police need to address this. More Police, more patrols, and sentences that will dissuade this behaviour. Do I need to carry a lethal weapon so I can go out for dinner? This is what happens when people fail to communicate and lose the art of conversation. There is no addressing of issues and we revert to primal anger and frustration. Add alcohol and you have an explosive mix. Kids need to learn to talk (and listen...) as well as text.

Lock them up.

When they are caught keep them behind bars until their Court appearance. At least they will have 12 to 18 months in jail to realise what they have done before some soft judge releases them to mummy for home detention.
