Reports are coming of a serious crash on State Highway 2, near Whakamarama.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says two vehicles have crashed on SH2, near Plummers Point Road.

"They have crashed head-on.

"It looks quite bad. People should expect delays."

A police spokesperson says police are responding to a collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of Plummers Point Road and State Highway 2.

"One person is reported to be in a serious condition and another has moderate injuries.

"Traffic management is in place at the scene."

Alternative route: Detour for northbound traffic: Barrett Rd to Old Hwy back to Youngson Rd and back onto SH2.
