Hmmm

Maybe "fight or flight"... Not everyone reacts in the same way in highly stressful situations and some can't remember the incident even when totally sober.

Yes... but!

It's more likely in today's environment, no license, driving while disqualified, on the phone, on a learners with others not allowed in the car, unregistered car, uninsured car, unwarranted car, stolen car, on drugs, or tanked.

I think you nailed it. But what can we DO about it?

You make a fair point. Could I ask you to reconsider using "Hmmm" for EVERY post? I know it indicates you are "thinking", but it makes online search a nightmare. I use it myself very occasionally. (Only when I have no conclusion over an issue.)

Here's a novel idea, let's get tough on the offenders. How's about we throw leniency out of the court, make the offender actually pay and if they can't, put them to hard labour!

I don't disagree about stiffer penalties. But even having a death penalty did not stop crime. The problem is in the minds of offenders and, until we can change their minds, crime will always be with us. I liked your idea about hard labour if they can't pay, but that does kind of punish the poor and empower the wealthy. Maybe genuine "community service" (where they actually help people in the community) might be a possibility. You probably won't agree, but I see rehabilitation (changing their minds) as more important than punishment. Meantime, stiffer penalties probably could help.

repeat offender?
