Emergency services are responding to a single-vehicle crash that has closed the southbound lane of State Highway 2 at Whakamarama.

One person has received serious injuries after being ejected from the vehicle.

"The crash was reported about 7.45pm, and happened near the intersection of Wainui South Road," says a police spokesperson.

"The highway remains open to northbound traffic, but anyone heading south is asked to avoid the area".

A Sunlive reader phoning 0800 SUNLIVE says there is an ambulance and two police cars at the scene on the Katikati side of Apata on SH2. Traffic in the Tauranga-bound lane is at a standstill.

"The road [SH2] is closed on the left for traffic going from Katikati towards Bethlehem,' says the SunLive caller.

"I am travelling to Omokoroa, we are on the Katikati side of Apata, and we've been here for half an hour. The traffic isn't moving.

"There is traffic coming through from Bethlehem to Katikati."

The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.

Motorists are advised to delay journeys and avoid the area.
