Batsman blasts 136 on opening

A scintillating century from Trident High School batsman Pip Thickpenny set alight the Western Bay of Plenty Cricket Secondary School first XI competition on Saturday.

Showing loyalty to his school side after being selected for the Eastern Bay of Plenty Attrill Cup team, the Trident youngster took aim on the boundaries at Katikati College to blast 136 runs against the home team.

Kevan Arnold also made a solid contribution to the Trident total posting a half century as the Eastern Bay visitors reached 257/8.
While Katikati College made a valiant chase for victory, the home side were restricted to 130/7 with Trident bowler Tom Casey returning 3/23.

Otumoetai College won their encounter against Aquinas College in a match that was competitive to the end.

Batting first, Otumoetai set a good-sized target when they reached 208/9 in their allotted overs.

Vaughan Wilson led the way with a solid 67, with Chris Charlton and Christian McDonald both posting 30 runs apiece.

Srinish Fernanado was the best of the Aquinas bowling attack finishing with 3/27.

Aquinas College made a solid run chase, but were bowled out for 175 to hand Otumoetai College the victory.

David Randrup (47) and Dion Collins (35) were the main contributors with the bat, with Joel Duggan (4/42) and Tim Klyen (3/30) doing the damage with the ball for the winners.

Bethlehem College were made to battle to the end, when they chased down Tauranga Boys College total of 153.

Denym Clarke top scored with 30 runs, with Jack Preston taking four wickets for Bethlehem.

While Bethlehem closed out the game to take out the encounter, the Tauranga Boys side made them fight all the way.

Jack Preston backed up his bowling performance with his sides top score of 32 not out with Bethlehem College scrapping home to a two wicket win.
