Amidst the thunderous cheers and whirring of wheels, the Mount Mustangs Inline Hockey teams have left an indelible mark on the prestigious Mt Wellington Invitational Open (Bauer Cup) Inline Hockey Tournament.

Showcasing remarkable talent and determination, this spirited squad of athletes from Tauranga displayed their prowess at Easter, emerging as a formidable force on the rink and igniting a wave of hometown pride.

Held at Skateland, in Auckland and hosted by the Mt Wellington Roller Sports Club, the four-day Bauer Cup event attracted around 10 clubs from across the North Island, from Wellington to Kerikeri.

“The Mount Mustangs Inline Hockey Under-10 team demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork, securing the silver medal in their category,” says the Under-10s coach Duane Finch.

Duane says the Under-12 team also exhibited an outstanding performance and emerged victorious, clinching the tournament title in their grade.

“Such achievements not only reflect the dedication and hard work of our players but also highlights the growth and strength that our club is experiencing and excellent coaching and committee teams behind them.”

Blending skill, strategy and sheer tenacity, the Mount Mustangs have surged through the competition, garnering attention and admiration.

The club, which meets at the Mount Maunganui Sports Centre, holds ‘Learn to Skate’ sessions for kids up to 12 years old on Friday nights from 5.30pm – 6.30pm.

“We also have the under-10s and under-12s training from 6.30pm - 7.30pm on Fridays, if people want to come and see what it’s all about,” says Duane.

“Also as a club we have a series of masters’ teams that train on Wednesday nights. And on Sunday nights we have a senior B for adults – they come and learn how to play inline hockey.”

Duane says four years ago, they had one serious team but now have a kids’ development programme, two junior and three senior teams.

“Inline hockey in Tauranga has been growing immensely and continues to grow.”
