A fire safety investigator is looking into the cause of a garage fire in Tauranga.

Fire crews were called to the blaze in Bethlehem around 12.45am.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications spokesperson says the garage was "fully involved" when crews arrived.

“It was a detached garage away from the main dwelling.”

Three trucks and one support vehicle from Tauranga and Greerton went to the scene and left just after 3am.

The spokesperson says there was no mention of anyone being in the garage at the time.
