Charges coming for Tauranga boat ramps

Boaties will soon have to pay to park their trailer near some boat ramps in Tauranga.

It will cost $20 per day to park a boat trailer near the Pilot Bay, Sulphur Point and Whareroa Reserve boat ramps.

Tauranga residents, clubs and businesses will be able to purchase a $200 yearly pass for their trailer instead of paying the daily charge.

The charges will come into effect from July 1.

Tauranga City Council adopted bylaws that would enable the parking charges at a meeting on Monday.

Money raised from the parking charges will go towards maintaining the boat ramps.

The annual cost of maintenance and depreciation of the ramps is $223,691 according to a council report.

“The really critical thing is we're doing this so that we can improve the quality and the quantity of our boat ramps and raise the finance to do that,” says Commission chair Anne Tolley.

Council head of transport Nic Johansson says the fee isn’t a parking charge per se.

“It’s a boat ramp charging fee for which we are collecting money via the parking.

“In order to get willing compliance we think it's really good if the boat ramp users understand that this actually goes towards the maintenance upkeep of the boat ramps.”

Commissioner Stephen Selwood says his concern is notifying current boat ramps users about the fees.

“Often when change occurs the biggest reaction is, ‘I didn't know about this’, it comes as surprise.”

He questions if there are plans to put notices on windscreens or other communication so people can be prepared for the change.

Council parking strategy manager Reece Wilkinson says there will be a heavy educational aspect before the charges are rolled out.

There are plans to put flyers on windscreens, the council is working with local clubs including fishing clubs and is also developing a communications strategy, he says.

There will also be a grace period where people are issued warnings instead of fines for not paying for parking to ensure everyone is informed, says Wilkinson.

The fee for not paying for parking will be $60, he says.

The council consulted on the fees as part of the 2024-34 long-term plan.

There were 238 submissions about the boat trailer fees, 47 per cent were opposed to the fee and 48 per cent supported it, the rest were neutral.

Reasons from those opposed included the fees would discourage people from getting out on the water, the ramps are paid for through rates already and other facilities like skateparks and cycleways weren’t charged, so why should boat ramps cost?

People in support of the charges said the boat ramps are used by non-ratepayers who should pay their share, and residents that don’t use boat ramps shouldn’t have to pay for them.

Others supported the fee but said they expected a higher level of service.

I am firm believer in user pays but have reservations on how this is proposed.
So how is this fee to be paid, What constitutes a day, What defines a boat trailer, I bet it wont be a simple setup. The easy way would be to put a meter like at the airport and give us frequent users a annual fee swipe card, but I bet that it wont be that simple. The TCC will want the revenue without spending anything on the setup costs.

Just endless

They are broke and need more cash. It begs the question HOW did they get the MONEY to spend on ALL the NON-needed projects ?

Park at your peril

Thats interesting they are charging to park you trailer & not to launch the boat. What a bunch of numpties. People will park elsewhere outside the nearby parking zone to avoid these charges. Seems like another great way to raise cash to pay for the commissioners inflated salaries. Lets see if the new council agrees. If the annual cost of maintenance and depreciation of the ramps is $223,691 how much of that is maintenance & the rest is a nominal accounting figure called depreciation? Even if this were true 1000 boaties would pay for this cost at the $200 fee pa proposed (or $20 per launch) There is a lot more than 1000 boats in Tauranga. How about charging cars $20 per visit to the CBD how would that go down? They spent $10million landscaping outside the new Farmers building in Elizabeth St .

These loosers trying a quick money grab before they get kicked out and a new Council democratically voted in.
Quite ironic the earlier story was about potential candidates... put the removal of boat charges in your pre-election spiel .
Be interested to see how this is policed .
And also assume my rates will be discounted next year if the council saves as much as they say it cost to maintain the ramps.

It's not so simple.

"In order to get willing compliance we think it's really good if the boat ramp users understand that this actually goes towards the maintenance upkeep of the boat ramps.”... so let's tell them it does... (Hey, we have so little transparency, nobody's gonna' know, right?) The $20 charge seems reasonable for a day on the water, and $200 a year also seems "fair" for regular users. Citizens & Ratepayers should get a discount (we already have a card for this). It looks like the new parking meters for this will need to have a card swipe for annual users and Ratepayers. Maybe it needs a "smart hub" like we use at the airport?

Skate parks
All sports fields and activities no matter where or what should all be treated the same.

So bicycles must pay to leave a persons property, to pay for the extravagant cycle ways all and any everywhere.

Where will this stop n start?

What Next

A levy on the fish caught? A levy on how much clean air we breath? A fee for walking around the mount and an extra fee for climbing up the mount? Seems to me the TCC doesn't want anyone to enjoy themselves and partake in the outside activies that they love.

Gone Fishing

Posted on 15-05-2024 13:38 | By Come on TCC!

So how high would the fine be for not paying?
Would it be like the freedom camping fines of $800 if you park in the same spot as someone sleeping in their car? and if it would only be $200 for a year and I put a boat trailer on my camper could I then park there permanently? Gone Fishing

Why are the non-trailered vehicles not being fined to generate income

Ironic that there are 2 non-trailered vehicles in the trailered Carpark area for the cover photo. They could have been generating a decent amount of money over the years if they actually enforced this, and now they want to start charging boaties to use it
