State Highway 29 will be fully closed to all traffic from 8pm to 3.30am each night from tonight, Monday, May 20 to Wednesday, May 22.
The closure for the three nights ahead is between between SH28/Rapurapu Rd, Te Poi and Cambridge Rd, Tauriko.
NZTA Waka Kotahi say that subject to weather and site conditions, asphalt road repairs and maintenance will occur on the western or Matamata side of the Kaimai summit.
During 8pm - 3.30am the highway will be closed in both directions.
During the highway closure, an alternative route for motorists is:
North through Paeroa to Waihi to Tauranga (SH24/27/26/2) - Not HPMV Compliant and recommended for light vehicles.
South through Rotorua to Tauranga (SH28/5/36) - HPMV Compliant
Lower Kaimai Stop/Go
As well as the closure on the western side, a Sto/Go will be in place on SH 29 between Omanawa Road and Gargan Road in the lower Kaimai range this week.
Due to road works, there will be Stop/Go traffic management with a 30km/h speed restriction in place on Monday, May 20 to Thursday, May 23 between 8pm and 5am.
After these hours a 70km/h remains in place.
NZTA advises motorists to plan their journey accordingly, allowing extra time for travel.
"Please note these works are weather dependent and may be postponed at short notice," says an NZTA spokesperson.
