Te Puna has won the Bay of Plenty Rugby Club 7's championship played at the Paengaroa Domain on Saturday with Opotiki winning the women's title.
For the first time, two trophies named after legends of Rugby Sevens in the Bay of Plenty were on the line.
The ten teams in the senior men's division competed for the Gordon Tietjens Cup with the women's sides vying to win the Exia Edwards trophy.
It was fitting Te Puna should take out the men's division, with coach Paul Tietjens receiving the inaugural Gordon Tietjens Cup from his father at the afternoon prize giving ceremony.
The Te Puna side won a hard fought final stanza defeating Mount Maunganui 22-5 to lift aloft the newly instituted trophy in triumph.
Te Puna captain Marty Stevenson led his troops from the front, with Otumoetai College student Billy Carter impressing many with his performances throughout the day.
Mount Maunganui benefited from the experience and knowledge of coach Brad Fleming, who represented New Zealand in 7's rugby.
It was also fitting that Opotiki took out the women's title and the Exia Edwards trophy.
The new trophy is named after another Bay of Plenty rugby legend, who has played for and lives in the Eastern Bay of Plenty town.
Exia's good friend Noi Kurei touched down a try in the dying minutes of the final to seal the Opotiki victory against Waikato University.
In further Sevens news, Bay of Plenty player Lavina Gould attended a New Zealand Women's 7's camp in Auckland at the weekend.
The Auckland camp was part of the selection process for the New Zealand team, which will compete in the inaugural Women's 7's International series to be played in Dubai later this month.
Lavina was selected to attend camp off the back of outstanding form in the Go4Gold Northern Region Women's 7's tournament.
Bay of Plenty stand-in women's coach David Mays says after the Northern Region tournament 'Lavina was absolute quality and impressed every time she got hold of the ball”.
BOPRU Club 7's Results 3 November 2012:
Open Men's Championship final: Te Puna 22, Mount Maunganui 5
Open Women's Championship final: Opotiki 10, Waikato University 7
