GNS Science has dropped the Volcanic alert level for Whakaari/White Island back to Level 2 following a ‘minor’ eruption on Friday.

The aviation status is now green.

"However out of caution and respect, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council harbourmaster has reiterated the advice for boaties to avoid the area for now," says Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Emergency Management's Duty Public Information Manager Lisa Glass.

On Friday, GNS Science raised the Volcanic Activity Level for Whakaari White Island to 3, which is the highest level, following the eruption.

Lisa says there was no risk to people on land.

"The main potential hazard to the mainland is ashfall, and that does not appear to have been generated by this event.

"However, we have posted ashfall safety advice and other information via our public channels and shared this with local media."

In consultation with the BOPRC Harbourmaster, BOP CDEM are advising all vessels to avoid the waters around Whakaari White island until further notice.

"There is nothing to see, and people put themselves at risk of harm if there is a further eruption," says Lisa.

"There may also be debris and ashfall in the area around the island."

She says they are aware that this event may cause distress to community members and bring back unwanted reminders of December 2019.

"We have asked media and our own teams to be aware of the sensitivity and pain that is associated with activity on Whakaari, and wish to assure you that this remains front of mind for us.

"MetService and GNS Science will be monitoring the area and will let us know if there is anything we need to pass on to you."
