Update, 6.43pm: A Sunlive reader says traffic is stationary in the left lane of SH29A heading towards Maungatapu.
"I think they might be starting to clear the traffic [in the other direction] as the traffic is starting to move from Maungatapu towards the Mount.
"We've been stuck here for 45 minutes."
A Sunlive reader says that traffic in the left lane has been turning around to travel back in the second laneas the highway has a median barrier all the way to Maungatapu Bridge, making it impossible to turn into the Mount-bound lane..
"We got people to go off on the side shoulder and turn around.'
Update, 6.15pm: State Highway 29A is closed while emergency services respond to an incident on Maungatapu Bridge.
"Police responded to reports of a person who jumped off the Maungatapu Bridge, SH29, around 5.40pm," says a police spokesperson.
"The person is now on shore and there don’t appear to be any serious injuries. "
Earlier, 5.46pm: State Highway 29A is closed while emergency services respond to an incident on Maungatapu Bridge.
A SunLive reader driving from the Baypark intersection towards Maungatapu says they had been stationary for more than 10 minutes on the Mount Maunganui side of Maungatapu Bridge.
"They placed a fire engine across the road on the Mount Maunganui side of the Maungatapu bridge," says the SunLive reader.
"Everyone heading towards Maungatapu is now turning around just before the bridge and heading back towards Mount Maunganui.
"The traffic is backed up all the way to the speedway."
Prior to turning around at the Maungatapu bridge, the SunLive reader reported that traffic going towards Maungatapu had completedly stopped.
"Police are on the left hand side of the bridge [in the Mount to Maungatapu lane]. We were halfway between the corner and the bridge.
"The flashing lights are on the left hand side.
"We saw more flashing lights coming down the highway from Maungatapu towards the bridge. An ambulance was also coming.
"Our traffic had stopped and the traffic coming through from Maungatapu was coming slowly, one by one.
"We are going back now towards the Mount, to go to Tauranga over Tauranga harbour bridge.'
