Car explosion victim recovering

A Te Puke man who suffered burns to his face when the car he was working under exploded is recovering well in Waikato Hospital.

The 42-year-old was transferred to Waikato Hospital burns unit from Tauranga Hospital after the explosion at his Te Puke home on October 31.


The car the 42-year-old man was working on was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene in Te Puke.

The man was working under his car in the garage of his Te Puke home at about 4.30am when the car burst into flames above him.

His son, son's wife and two children aged five and seven were sleeping in the house at the time and woke to the blast.

The man's son told SunLive he ran out of the house to find his father attempting to put out the flames with a garden hose.

Emergency services including St John Ambulance paramedics from Tauranga and Te Puke, Te Puke Fire Brigade and police were called to the man's home.

The man suffered burns to his face, hands and upper torso.

The Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance was called to Waikato Hospital and transported a Waikato Hospital ICU retrieval team to Tauranga to pick up the 42-year-old.

Waikato Hospital reports the man is stable in a ward today.
