Coromandel highway closed due to fallen tree

Arborists are clearing trees from SH25 this morning.

State Highway 25 in the Coromandel is closed this morning.

A police spokesperson says the highway is closed due to a tree that has fallen and slips blocking the road.

"It is expected to take some time to clear."

Motorists are advised to expect delays and can check the status of the road on the NZTA website - https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/regions/waikato/traffic-updates/469044/details

A severe weather warning is in place for the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel today.

Until around 11am today, heavy rain is expected around the region.

The MetService says heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.

Rain is expected to clear this morning with fine breaks developing.

The MetService warns there is a chance of an afternoon shower.
