Work is progressing well on the roundabout at the intersection of State Highway 1 and State Highway 29 in Piarere, says an NZTA Waka Kotahi spokesperson.

"We’ve installed two underpass structures on both approaches and have begun pavement work on the roundabout.

"While this work is underway, traffic south of the roundabout has been moved onto a newly constructed section of road beside SH1."

NZTA says this is a short bypass road which rejoins SH1 before the intersection, which continues to operate as normal.

The short bypass is expected to remain in place until September 2024.

"Take extra caution when you're driving through the site," says an NZTA spokesperson.

"A temporary speed limit of 60km/h will be in place around the project site to protect roadworkers and ensure the safety of everyone travelling through the area."

Construction on the roundabout got underway in January 2024 and is expected to take up to two years to complete.

NZTA says once completed, the 60-metre-wide roundabout will greatly improve safety and wait times for people travelling through Waikato.
