Update 9am: State Highway 2 near Pikowai has reopened on Saturday morning.

It was closed by a large slip at Pikowai on Friday night that came down in heavy rain.

The Transport Agency says contractors worked through the night to clear it and the road opened shortly before 8.30am.

Earlier, 7.15am: Due to a large slip on Friday night, State Highway 2 remains closed on Saturday morning between Paengaroa and Matatā.

State Highway 2 near Pikowai was blocked by a large slip on Friday evening.

Police were notified of the slip at 7.55pm.

Motorists are advised to use SH33, SH30 and SH34 as a detour, and allow extra time for travel.

Diversions are in place at the intersections of SH 2/Arawa Road and SH 2/Otamarakau Valley Road.
