A controlled fire on land in the lower Kaimai range is raising concerns amongst motorists driving along State Highway 29 on Sunday afternoon.

“Coming up the Kaimais from Waikato, [there’s] heaps of smoke,” says a SunLive reader, who is concerned it may be a bush or house fire.

Smoke can be seen billowing up from the farmland in the lower Kaimai range on the eastern side of SH29.

Fire and Emergency NZ Northern communications manager Mark Richards says the vegetation fire is a controlled burn on a farm property.

"We have a fire truck from Tauranga station attending,” says Mark.

"There's an area of land that has a controlled burn."
