As part of a package to replace nine bridges across New Zealand, three bridges in the Coromandel electorate will be upgraded, says National MP for Coromandel Scott Simpson.

“I am thrilled that the Transport Minister Simeon Brown has confirmed that SH25 Pepe Bridge, SH25 Ramarama Stream Bridge, and SH27 Ohinekaua Stream Bridge will be replaced, with construction expected to begin from mid-2025 and be completed by mid-2027.

“In the case of Pepe Bridge, it will become a two-way bridge. I have no doubt residents and all those who holiday in our region will rejoice at this news.” 

“The sight of long lines of vehicles navigating stop-go signs in the swelting summer heat has become an unfortunate byproduct of our region’s popularity, not to mention the inconvenience that locals encounter on a day-to-day basis.”

Simpson says having a resilient roading network has always been crucial to the Coromandel Peninsula and the wider electorate.

"The development of these replacement bridges will be a significant boost to our region, particularly the two-way bridge at Pepe Stream.”

“I have been fighting for the replacement of one-lane bridges across our region."

Simpson says the news of the bridges has been a long time coming.

"But I couldn’t be happier that there is firm commitment to invest in our local transport network.

“The Pepe Bridge has served Tairua and the Eastern Coromandel Peninsula communities well for many years, but time and growing demands have long proven it needed replacing.

"Once its replacement is operational, it will mean locals can get to where they need go quickly and safely, and visitors will have more time to experience everything the Coromandel has to offer.”
