A strong gust of wind in Western Bay of Plenty on Tuesday afternoon has resulted in roof tiles being dislodged, and debris and signs sent flying along streets in Katikati.

The Katikati fire brigade have been called to a house that underwent roof damage in Mural Drive, Katikati.

“We responded to a roof that had had several dislodged tiles as a result of the weather,” says Fire and Emergency Northern shift manager Josh Pennefather.

“We placed a tarp on the roof where the tiles were missing and put broken tiles into a rubbish bag for them.”

A caller to SunLive says that a large downpour of rain and a gust of wind swept through Katikati at around 4.30pm, with damage to a vehicle after debris broke a car window.

“It was like a mini tornado,” says a SunLive reader.

While some streets had flying debris, other callers say that their streets had no wind at all.

“I live in Park Road, and we had nothing happening here,” says a SunLive caller.

“The heavy burst of rain and gust of wind was over quite quickly, leaving damage to the back of the liquor store.  And a car was damaged.”
