From Barbie to Squishmallows LEGO to board game classics, NZ toy experts have collated the very best toys for children this year - if the kids somehow haven’t told you already.
The Warehouse is New Zealand’s largest toy retailer and, with less than five months to Christmas, is seeing a big uptick in savvy Kiwi parents stocking up on toys.
Barbie is still riding high but there are plenty of newcomers and some classics like LEGO, Squishmallows, Hot Wheels cars and Paw Patrol who aren’t far behind.
Even board game classics like Operation and Trivial Pursuit are back in demand, as is the 1990s owl-bot Furby.
So, what should you be looking to grab for Christmas this year? The toy experts at The Warehouse have put together a list of the hottest toys for 2024.
Sarah Brittenden has been curating toy collections for The Warehouse for four years and has seen every toy trend under the sun. From fleeting fads to timeless classics, she knows what captures kids' imaginations and stands the test of time for parents.
“2024 toy trends are a blend of the new toys and strong nostalgia vibes, from the innovative LEGO Botanical Range to the return of board game classics," says Sarah.
“The ‘kidult’ trend continues to grow, proving that toys are truly for all ages. Adults are seeking out toys for some fun relief and for their collectability. LEGO, in particular, does this really well. Their Botanical Range offer a creative outlet that doubles as a decorative piece, making them appealing to a broader audience."
Sarah says collectables are a major trend this year.
"Collecting toys has always been a way for kids to engage in play and for adults to revisit their childhood. Whether it’s Zuru’s Mini Brands or trading cards such as Pokémon & NBA, we’re seeing a big resurgence in collectables," says Sarah.
“We’re also seeing movie-inspired toys jump up the list due to new releases hitting screens like Wicked, Despicable Me 4 and the sequel to Moana.”
With the cost of living hitting wallets, parents are becoming more strategic with their toy purchases but parents are still prioritising their children’s happiness come birthdays and Christmas.
“Even during tougher times, ensuring kids have a fantastic birthday or Christmas remains a priority.
"We've observed that parents are choosing toys that offer educational value and multiple play opportunities, making every dollar go further. Brands that provide a good price range and added value are doing well with parents this year.”
