Motorists who travel along State Highway 2 are being warned to expect night works north of Tauranga near the Te Puna roundabout.
Starting this Sunday, September 8, the works are expected to take nine nights to complete.
"Within the last two weeks crews have almost completed the section in the Te Puna dip and are now moving on to the section closer to the Te Puna roundabout which requires a road rebuild," says a spokesperson for the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.
"The rebuild work will take place at night, between 7pm and 5am, with stop/go traffic management in place.
"During the day, and until the work is finished, there will be a reduced speed limit through the site due to a change in the surface level of the road. Ramps will be in place to help traffic transition through the site."
Work schedule:
Week 1: Sunday, September 8, to Thursday, September 12
Week 2: Sunday, September 15, to Friday morning, September 20
The northbound lane (towards Katikati) will be worked on first to minimise disruption for city bound traffic during the AIMS Games which starts this Saturday, September 7, says the roading agency.
"Maintenance on this high volume stretch of road is very important for safety and resilience of the network. We understand how working in this area of the Western Bay can cause significant delays and queues, which is why crews are working at night to minimise disruption.
"More than 20,000 people travel through this part of SH2 daily, a smooth road makes all these trips safer and more enjoyable. We have several more sites coming up for SH2 this maintenance season, including at the Snodgrass Road intersection, the Turner Road intersection and Athenree Gorge.
"There will also be a chipseal resurfacing programme, which includes night works on SH2 north of Tauranga during the school holiday period, this summer. This will be alongside ongoing works at Minden for the Takitimu North Link project.
"Delays are to be expected, and we encourage people to prepare and check Journey Planner before they travel.
"NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi thanks people for their patience."

Interesting that NZTA are telling us to plan ahead when they clearly do not! They have just finished re-surfacing the "Te Puna Dip" and are about to start 20 metres up the road. Why did they take all their gear away, wait a couple of weeks then bring it all back & start again?
Any forward planning person would have done the jobs either at the same time or 1 right after the other. Oh but wait!!!! They need to pay someone to take all those cones away then bring them back, plus wait to cause maximum disruption with thousands of extra people arriving for Aims Games. Great planning team NZTA

Im happy it's finally being remedied but I would've gladly had that all be done in one go. Well at least I have an alternative route as I commute to nightshift work. Oh and thanks for the heads up because the electronic sign says nothing about it. Oh and I'd like to add that they may consider using the unlevel surface signage. I shall bill them for my car alignment.
