Waihi mixed teams tournament again proves popular

The OceanaGold Mixed Teams Tournament was held on Sunday September 22 in perfect conditions, said Waihi Golf Club Rodger Bagshaw.

“The tournament was organised by the Saturday Ladies who were thrilled to welcome the field of 112 players, which included players from 14 other clubs,” said Bagshaw.

“The sponsors of the day were OceanaGold Waihi Operation, and the ladies presented a magnificent raffle table, both of which were greatly appreciated by the players.”

The competition was mixed teams of four, and the total Stableford of the team counted.

The winning team was Francis and Kristine Gascoigne, and John and Rosalind Giffney.

In second place were Chris and Liz Hale, with David and Tamara Morris. In third was Grant and Jackie Robson, with Eddie and Denise Ruha.

Fourth place was taken by a team from Ngahinepouri, made up of Deborah Foster, Debbie Crocker, Raymond Foster, and Steve Foster.

MONDAY VETS:

A smaller field than usual contested a four-player team competition with the best three Stableford scores per hole counting.

The winning team was Jane Wordley, Denise Morgan, Earle White, and Bruce Rutter.

Tied for second were Bev Ireland, Sarah Tomsett, Kerry Lewis, and Mark Mora. The other team was Avon Gordon, Judy Saunders, Rodger Bagshaw, and Errol Millar.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

The weather had improved somewhat from the previous day’s icy conditions.

A nett haggle was played, and Jill Morrison came to the fore with a nett 73 to head off Megan Jowsey on 75.

Next was Karen Roche and Shelly Lithgow who were both on 77 nett, then Sarah Tomsett and Rosalind Giffney on 78. Tying the Hidden Holes were Jill Morrison and Shelly Lithgow on 7 points.

THURSDAY MEN:

Light rain showers and a cold wind greeted players this week.

In the Morning Haggle most players found the going tough. In Div One, Tayla Turnbull defied the odds with 39 points, while Pete Rowe was next with 37. They were followed by Doug Ferguson 35, and Jim Powell 33.

In Div Two, Kevin McLoughlin was out on his own with 37 points, with Neil Walker, Errol Millar, and Tom Rowbotham all next with 34 points, then Graham O’Dwyer and Carson Smith with33.

The Afternoon Haggle was also played in two divisions.

In Div One, Bill Young with 37 points snuck ahead of Nigel Sanderson on 36, with Graeme Parkinson next on 34. David Morris, Mark Hope, and Terry Gerbich all had 33 points.

In Div Two, Murray Butterworth with 37 points, finished well clear of Dave Campbell and Damian Dunlop who both had 34 points, Hadleigh Morgan finished with 33.

SATURDAY LADIES:

On a fine day with a cooling wind the ladies played a nett medal haggle.

The top scores were by Jackie Robson and Sharon Deacon with both having nett 72s, with Desley Rosevear next with 36.

On 76 were Bev Ireland and Kathy Ashton. Both Jackie Robson and Sharon Deacon shared the Hidden Holes.

SATURDAY MEN:

It was the first round of the stroke play championships, but in the Morning Haggle John Giffney had a great day by winning with 39 points and registering the only two of the morning field.

Next were Earle White and Gary Choat with 38 points, then Mark Mora, Richard Taitoko and Allen Sarjant with 37 points. John Libby was well back on 34!

The Afternoon Haggle proved tough for scoring with Damian Dunlop leading the field with 36 points, with Kevan Stewart next on 35.

With 34 points were David Morris and Rhys Peden, while all on 33 were Rob Page, Nic Davies, Calin Samson, Malcolm Coldicutt, Chris Pilmer, Paul Williams, and Phillip Logan.
