Roading crews will be a familiar sight around Rotorua this summer, with the maintenance season officially starting next week.

There is a lot to get done in the Bay of Plenty, with about 110 lane kilometres of road resealing and rebuilding programmed across the region, kicking off this week on State Highway 30/Sala St in central Rotorua.

“This work is disruptive,” said NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Bay of Plenty system manager Sandra King.

“However, the benefits far outweigh the negatives as we work to improve road pavements. We simply can’t complete all of this work without causing disruption to people’s journeys.”

From Monday, September 30, through to Friday, October 11, road rebuilding will take place between 8am and 4pm each day on Sala St which, for safety and to ensure the work is done as possible, will be closed between Scott St and McIntyre Ave. Access will be residents only.

A detour will be available via SH30A, Te Ngae Rd to Amohau St to Pukuatua St, left to State Highway 5 Old Taupō Rd, left to SH30 Hemo Rd and in reverse.

“The lead-up to Christmas is a busy time on our roads, for both those working on them and those travelling on them,” said King.

“To make it as smooth as possible, we need to work together. You can do your part by planning your journey and following the signs, temporary speed limits and any instructions our crew may give you.

“We’re working hard to complete a significant programme of work, which will provide better roads to drive on.”

Also in October, about seven weeks of work will start on State Highway 36 near the Awahou Stream and another site on SH30 near the Puarenga Bridge.

In the new year, the focus will turn to State Highway 5, north of Maraeroa Rd, for about eight weeks.

The SH30 Eastern Corridor improvements continue between Iles and Wharenui Rds, where work began in 2022 and is being completed in three zones.

Zones 1 and 2 are nearly complete, with final sealing and new bus shelters to come.

Zone 3 will focus on the SH30/Wharenui Rd intersection and the final scope of work expected to be confirmed in the coming months.
